Zarate against Southampton
|
Not sure I've seen a WHU player have such a bad 45 minutes like Zarate did against Southampton. When you've got both Noble and Collins launching into you on two separate occasions, then you know you're not doing your job. I thought Ginge was gonna hit him at one point.

Ok Willtell
So why do people not want players like Zarate that do it different?
Are these the same people that wanted BFS out but now want BFS style with no Zarate type play?

What you're describing Mex was our game plan for the previous 4 seasons...
When the options are limited our team revert to type...

I think Carroll has more to his game than receiving high balls particularly crosses. Carroll is quiet good with his get as well. The problem for Carroll is he is nearly always the lone forward when we play him and for what ever reason he does not get much team attacking type opportunities. Also we have not seen him play much with Payet. Perhaps they can work well together?
As for ZARATE (name of thread) for me he is a great player. The only frustration may be that he tries driving forward to much and so loses the ball sometimes. However, I prefer that to passing back. First half of Southampton was so so crap. I would say every midfield player accept zarate (1) did not want the ball and so the backs only option was to boot it up the field like some bunch of schoolboys (2) when they had the ball they were afraid to go forward and passed it back to the defended who then booted it up the field It was absolutely abysmal!

As I've said several times on other threads, Carroll's game is based mainly on his aerial abilities. If Bilic selects him, then the team should be factoring in a crossing game. That doesn't mean exclusively a crossing game, but one that has that as part of the mix. Both Cresswell and Jenkinson were getting rave reviews in the first few months of last season, and it wasn't for their defending ability. If Bilic selects Carroll, and there is a dearth of crosses for him, then the criticism should either be of Bilic for not instructing the team to provide the service, or the team for not following Bilic's instructions to do so.
As for Zarate being a scapegoat, I don't think that's true. I think everyone is basically positive about his talents, but he is rightly criticised for being too greedy with the ball at times.

Wrong mammal. Being both pony and a pony sums him up.

No, I think the desire for a scapegoat sums it up.

There's plenty of other explanations for that though.

You've obviously not noticed the dog's abuse that Carroll has been getting.

Zarate is this season's designated scapegoat. It's the only explanation for the grief he's getting.

I thought Zarate was our best midfielder in the first half.

He is greedy which frustrates the hell out of me but what did for him on Monday was his lack of tracking back when they attacked down the right.
Payet and Lanzini add to their creative side by chasing back and doing their defensive work whereas Zarate tends to stand and watch.

Well he isn't a midfielder. He's a forward, which is why he probably gets more shots off?

had a poor half, but is a useful player.
Unlike a lot of our midfielders of recent times (eg noble) he is not afraid to have a shot (and scores) and likes to run at players ball at feet.
Also deadball, put in a lot of decent corners against villa. Not rocket science I know but how many times have we seen terrible corners taken this season?
his downfall is he is selfish as fuck a lot of the time, keeps the ball too long, tries to go passed 4 players and loses it instead of passing. very frustrating to watch. Doing this on the half way line surrounded by the other team isn't professional.

He has a role against the shit in the league when our best players are out.
Against a good team like Soton you cringe and wish Lanzini was playing instead.
Simple as.

I also like that.
I'd prefer him to be more - what's the word? - collaborative, but many top strikers are selfish which seems to contribute to their success.

He's an enigma, very frustrating player, basically does what he wants and thinks his is better than what he is. Def worth his place in the squad though, can make things happen, scores the odd goal, and I like the fact that he's not afraid to have a shot, even if it does usually end up in row z.
